Hi from Venice!

From tropical beaches too many to name, then ice balls of Penang and rain buckets of Kuala Lumpur, I suddenly found myself in Italy, on a continent that felt freezing (when I looked at both temperatures and prices after 5 months in Asia). I already forgot what a real winter looks like.

Arriving back to Europe, via a snowy stopover in Istanbul, felt easy and quick. Turkish Airlines has large entertainment screens (well, lousy headphones in economy class), and watching movies was mostly a joy. Among many more famous blockbusters, I especially liked “My Penguin Friend”, starring Jean Reno.

The movie is based on a true story of a penguin that swims every year from Argentina to Brazil, to visit a fisherman who saved him.

I could relate to the penguin’s wonder story, not only because it involves Ilha Grande, the island I visited and loved more than a decade ago. I could also imagine the temperature shocks this little traveler had to endure while traveling between his subpolar and tropical homes.

Luckily, I didn’t need to swim from the warm waters of Malacca Strait to the chilling Adriatic. I was in a warm plane, only counting snowflakes forming on the other side of the window.

Transit in the Turkish metropolis, on the border of two continents, was so short I practically had to run to catch my connecting flight.

That was nothing close to what I experienced in Singapore where I recently spent 24 hours at Changi Airport.

From Discovery Garden to Jewel Waterfall, an entire labyrinth of restaurants and shops, curated art and tamed jungles, and, certainly unforgettable, theme park attractions, filled my day.

Spending 24 practically sleepless hours anywhere may sound like a hassle, but I loved every second of it!

Forget everything you know about airports being boring, soulless limbo zones. My latest article dives headfirst into the Changi experience, where waterfalls are larger-than-life (both analog and digital) and butterflies flutter freely in their own little paradise.

Get ready to discover the wonders of the Jewel, bounce through Canopy Park, and maybe even challenge a Boeing 747 to a race.

Buckle up and join me on this layover like no other! At Changi, you won’t just pass the time; you’ll wish you had more of it.

If you’re heading to Asia, plan a stopover here, but not before you read about what to do at Singapore Airport.

Have a penguin-unstoppable week!
