Hi from Lyon!

The third-largest French city sits just a hop west of Switzerland, about 100 kilometers away from Geneva. Lyon boasts its collection of quirks, but before we jump into that…

My last week’s report on a not-only Swiss custom of decorating churches with bones ended up being more than just intriguing. When I posted a photo from the skull-adorned Beinhaus in Leuk on Facebook, a friend who had visited a similar ossuary chapel in Milan called this interior design practice – morbid.

During my wanderings, I’ve seen my fair share of extraordinary religious sanctuaries. One of the craziest constructions had to be the Chicken Church in Indonesia.

Sometimes, it’s just hard to decipher the architect’s mind. For instance, some claim that Lyon’s Basilica of Notre-Dame de Fourvière, with its four rising towers, looks like an upside-down elephant.

What’s the most unusual church you’ve stumbled upon during your travels?

Find this in today’s newsletter:

  • Words: Cruise, crawl, and ciao.
  • Images: Dressed-up fantasy and naked truth.
  • Numbers: Costly adventures.
  • P.S.: Who you gonna call?

Have a quirky week!

Traboules, Not Troubles

Preferring not to bother with circumnavigating the building blocks, Lyon silk workers chose to weave shortcuts into their city. The ingenious architectural solutions were traboules, hidden corridors one could use to cut through the courtyards. The network of these secret passageways now allows you not only to shorten your walk but also to admire the architecture along the way.

CRUISING 101

Ever since I stumbled upon a Transoceanic 15-day cruise (link not sponsored) with a base price of just £199, I’ve been pondering if I should go. I feel like I’d just eat their budget on this repositioning cruise to the Caribbean. If you also wonder whether cruise ships are just for grandmas and gamblers, here’s a handy guide to sailing the seven seas.

CRAWL OF SHAME

Air Canada had to apologize to a man with cerebral palsy who was told he had to crawl off a plane due to a lack of time to bring a wheelchair on board. The shocking report came just after the same airline forgot to load the wheelchair of Canada’s chief accessibility officer.

DEPARTURE GATE

Ryanair is known for its cheeky and unfiltered social media presence. But the captain behind it decided to step off the plane. Michael Corcoran, the low-cost carrier’s head of social media, spilled some Twitter tea after his resignation.

From wild Halloween costumes in the New York subway to Mexico City’s traditional Day of the Dead parade, switching from October to November always comes with a grand masquerade. I enjoyed these travel-related dress-ups the most: the Parisian bed bug-inspired trend, Vueling’s Addams Family stunt, and that Crazy Plane Lady I can’t stop watching.

🏛️

The Museum of Archeology in Barcelona dared to toss the concept of costumes aside. Visitors were invited to an exhibition without the pressure to think about what to wear. Thus everyone was naked; the Greek warriors in the photographs, the museumgoers, and even the museum guide.

Imagine a couple of dolphins on a pristine beach with a thatched cottage and palm trees. A Facebook friend shared a photo from such Cuban paradise, but sadly I had to crush the illusion of untouched beauty. For true wilderness, dive into the just-published rare footage of one of the greatest dolphin gatherings ever filmed.

 NUMBERS

100

The number of deaths per year at the most dangerous natural wonder in the world. It’s in Europe, and it claims 12 times more lives than the challenging Mount Everest.

Nobody likes Airbnb’s cleaning fees, but this is the cleanup bill one Florida host should pay after the guests contaminated her property with narcotics. Of course, she could always put her house on the market, like Californians selling a six-bedroom house with a meth lab for $1.5 million.

$1.37

If you want to fly to Mongolia for this price, you’ll have to hop on a plane at China’s Foshan Shadi Airport. Or will it just be a bus with wings?
