Hi from Khao Lak!
In the old times, this small village in Phang Nga province of Thailand was a symbol of safety. It got its name (“Big Mountain”) after a peak that ancient seamen used as a landmark for navigating to the harbor of Thap Lamu.
But the rest of the world learned about Khao Lak in 2004 when nothing could save thousands of people who lost their lives under the Indian Ocean tsunami. It hit the hardest exactly on these shores.
Flying over tropical seas can look idyllic, as my landing-in-Phuket video suggests, but one should never underestimate the power of nature to both create and destroy.
Compared with what happened in Khao Lak two decades ago, the issue that overflowed me upon my arrival to this country may seem like a first-world problem.
You see, I was carried away by the fact that the new immigration rules allowed me to stay in Thailand visa-free for 60 days. So naturally, I booked my flight from October 2nd to December 2nd. If you see nothing wrong here, then better read this educational piece on visa overstay. It could save you time, money, and worries.
Have you ever made a similar silly mistake? My flight out to the Philippines is two days too late, and I am leaning toward paying the fine. However, if you have a different experience or point of view, do tell me!
I want to stay in Thailand as long as possible. But not in jail.
Have a prisonless week!
Ivan Kralj
